Broken English.
[2007 / Regie: Zoe R. Cassavetes]
Zoe R. Cassavetes, another Cassavetes-Sprout with a mediocre to bad debut.
Parker Posey als leicht neurotische End 20er/Anfang 30erin, die mit dem Problem des Individualisierungsdrucks unserer Gesellschaft bei der Suche nach DEM oder einfach nur EINEM Mann zu kaempfen hat. Late-Capital-Krankheit: Anxiety Attacks combined with the fear of ending up lonesome in a world that forces us into egocentrism. Gena Rowlands als Mama der alten Schule, die ihre Tochter unter die Haube gebracht haben will puts further pressure on her. In addition Parker spends lotsa time with her best friend & her lover, a married couple – it all adds up & is way too overwhelming – pills!
Then she meets this guy and though she can‘t get rid of all that shit there’s a chance she‘ll find love and manage to get along with that boy. Open ending with an optimistic outlook on at least this microcosm.
This film is all about Parker Posey, she’s the film and is indeed kinda fascinating, but horrible overacting as well. Still i somewhat like Broken English, the feeling of it. It picks up some ideas of daddies cinéma verité, the mix of everday feeling & strange stage-like acting. The camera work incoperates a lot of this every day feeling/the imagination this scene is real and can happen next door – no monster, no hyper-dramatic plot. That makes this film kinda bearable!
